MMOJA kati ya washindi wa shindano la Tusker la Tusker All Stars 2011 Mtanzania Peter Msechu amewaasa wanafunzi nchini kutilia mkazo wa lugha ya Kiingereza kwani inasaidia katika kupata mafanikio.
Msechu amesema hayo leo jumatano wakati alipotembelea Shule ya Sekondari ya Nia Njema iliyopo mjini Bagamoyo ambayo aliwahi kusoma kidato cha kwanza hadi cha nne.
Alisema kufahamu lugha hiyo ni kitu muhimu kwani kumemsaidia kwa kiasi kikubwa kutwaa taji hilo ambalo litamuwezesha kufanya kazi na wasanii mbalimbali wakubwa duniani.
“Napenda niwaambie lugha ya kiingereza ni mkuhimu katika kusaka mafanikio ya kitu…mimi nilipokuwa nasoma hapa niliona kama mwalimu wangu ananionea baada ya kuniadhibu kutokana na kutoifahamu vema, lakini sasa nimeona hawakuwa wakikosea,”Alisema.
Aliongeza kuwa, tangu alipoanza mchakato wa kushiriki shindano hilo kwa mara ya kwanza alikutana na changamoto ya lugha hali iliyomfanya aombe msaada wa kufunzwa zaidi na walimu wake hali iliyomsaidia kuchanja mbuga.
“Asikwambie mtu kiingereza ndiyo kila kitu kwani bila hivyo ningeona aibu kujifunza na kuishia njiani…nawasihi wadogo zangu kuitilia mkazo lugha hii,”Aliongeza.
Aidha, Msechu aliwashuku walimu wa shule hiyo kwani ndiyo chachu ya mafanikio yake kutokana na shule hiyo kutilia mkazo lugha hiyo kama lugha kuu ya mawasiliano shuleni hapo.
Naye mkuu wa shule hiyo, Anthony Nyenshile alimpongeza msanii huyo kwa kukiendeleza kipaji chake sambamba na kujibidiisha hali ambayo imemfikisha hapo alipo.
“Kwa kweli kijana huyu alikuwa mchapakazi na anayependa sana sanaa…tunakupongeza kwa hatua uliyofikia hivyo tunakutakia kila lka heri katika harakati zako za kimuziki,”Alisema.
Msechu, pamoja na wenzake wawili Alfa wa Burundi na Davis wa Uganda walitwaa ushindi wa shindano hilo lililofikia tamati mwishoni mwa wiki iliyopita huko Nairobi, Kenya.
Kwa ushindi huo wasanii hao watapata fursa ya kupanda jukwaani na wasanii mbalimbali wakubwa toka nchini Marekani ambao wanatarajiwa kwenda nchini Kenya.
Msechu akizungumza na baadhi ya wanafunzi wa sekondari ya Nia Njema akiwahamasisha umuhimu wa kuifahamu lugha ya kiingereza.

UC Berkeley J-School opens 2010-2011 fellowships for African journalists

The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley is pleased to invite applications for three yearlong fellowships for accomplished African journalists, beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year.

The fellowships will each total $36,000, including round trip airfare, professional stipends, and rent while in Berkeley.

The selected fellows will join the School’s Visiting International Scholars Program and participate in a new journalism training initiative aimed to provide high quality coverage of agricultural development issues in Africa for dissemination in U.S., African, and international media. The initiative will also offer dedicated funding for both domestic U.S. and Africa travel for research and reporting work.

Requirements:
Selected fellows must bring at least five years experience in journalism in sub-Saharan Africa, in any medium including print newspaper, magazine, television, radio, documentary, or new media format such as blogging, podcasting, and other online publishing.

Applicants also must demonstrate a proven track record of commitment to the truth-seeking craft, and a willingness to effectively investigate the problems of hunger on the continent with an aim to publish or broadcast stories about these topics and bring them to light in compelling form for audiences in Africa and around the world. A B.A. degree, at minimum, is strongly desired, along with experience and knowledge about agricultural issues in the applicant’s native country.

Selected African fellows will enroll with other Visiting Scholars in background courses at Berkeley examining the global food crisis starting in late August 2010, while also contributing their knowledge about Africa and journalism to their U.S. and international peers.

Funding: University of Ohio presents Opportunities for Graduate Study: Local Knowledge and Climate Change Adaptation in Tanzania

Two two-year research assistantships at the M.A. level are available through a new project on local knowledge and climate change adaptation in Tanzania supported by the National Science Foundation’s Geography and Spatial Science (GSS) Program. The project -Linking Local Knowledge and Local Institutions for the Study of Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change: Participatory GIS in Northern Tanzania – investigates the myriad ways in which human, social, and institutional capital enable households and communities to draw on local knowledge and outside specialist knowledge to moderate the negative effects of greater climatic instability on rural livelihoods.

In addition to completing required courses for the MA program over two academic years (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), the successful candidates will contribute to an international interdisciplinary research project. We expect applicants to develop a thesis project that contributes to the project’s research objectives.

One graduate research assistant will work on the development of online multimedia applications derived from a participatory GIS. Background or interest in cartography and web-based mapping is desirable.

A second research assistant will work with the research team on the implementation of the project’s participatory field methodology and contribute to data analysis. The student’s interests should be focused on environment-development interactions (e.g., the dynamics of resource access, political, environmental or cultural-linguistic dimensions of local knowledge systems, gendered aspects of climate change adaptation). Proficiency in Kiswahili or interest in learning Kiswahili at Ohio University is a plus.

The assistantships include two academic years of tuition waiver and stipend for students enrolled in the Geography M.A. program. Additional support is available for student field research activities in Tanzania.

The Bernard van Leer Foundation is pleased to announce the inaugural Oscar van Leer Fellowship. We invite applications from journalists in qualifying countries (Mexico, Kenya, India (Orissa), Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Caribbean Region) who have an interest in covering children’s issues.

Three fellowships will be awarded, consisting of high-level professional training in skills related to journalism about early chilhood development and children’s rights. A four-week, expenses-paid professional training course in the Netherlands conducted by the Radio Natherland Training Centre will be provided to the successful candidates.

This is a great opportunity for young journalists to further their general profesional development and to establish for themselves a particular area of expertise.

About the fellowship
The Bernard van Leer Foundation is an international philanthropic foundation based in The Hague that seeks to improve opportunities for disadvantaged young children. It has a long and respected track record of working internationally on early childhood development and children’s rights.

The Oscar van Leer Fellowship commemorates Oscar van Leer, the son of the foundation’s benefactor. The inaugural fellowship also marks the foundation’s 60th anniversary.

One of the difficulties the foundation encounters is that young children’s issues are often poorly understood in media coverage, if they are covered at all. The aim of the Oscar van Leer Fellowship is to contribute to a gradual improvement in the quality and quantity of media coverage of early childhood issues by training up-and-coming journalists, giving them knowledge and understanding that they will be able to apply as they progress in their journalistic careers.

Who should apply?
The fellowship is intended for ambitious young journalists with an interest in children’s issues. We don’t expect you to be an expert in children’s issues already – that’s why we’re offering training. But we want you to be interested in learning more about the issues faced by disadvantaged young children, and the ways in which media coverage can raise awareness and shape opinions of them.

Applicants must be connected to a reputable media outlet, either as an employee or as a frequently published freelance contributor, and must intend to continue to pursue a career in the media. The fellowship is open to journalists in all forms of media, including print, radio, television and web.

Deutsche Welle: 15 full-scholarships for International Media Studies Masters Program

The International Media Studies Masters Program is a four-semester, full-time program for further education. The program combines topics like media and development, journalism, communication science and media economics, while developing practical skills and competencies that are important for the world of media. It is a joint project from the University of Bonn, the Bonn Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Deutsche Welle, Germanys international broadcaster with its headquarters in Bonn. The bilingual Masters Program offers a unique course that combines the acquisition and development of practical skills in journalism with theoretical grounding. The program emphasizes on the current development of global media and the connection between media and cooperative development. Students from around the world will benefit from the inclusion of partners and the unparalleled mix of research, lectures and practical experience.

Applicants need a bachelor's degree and more than one year of professional experience in a media-related field. The Master's Program is bilingual. For this reason, applicants must have good verbal and written communication skills in German and English.

Opportunity for scholarships for Masters studies in TANZANIA Starting in the academic year 2009-2010

The Embassy of Belgium in Dar es Salaam and BTC in collaboration with President’s
Office, Public Service Management, announce the availability of a limited number of
scholarships for Master studies in Tanzania for the new academic year 2009-2010.
Applicants must have the Tanzanian nationality and be no more than 40 years of age
on 1st May 2009, have a relevant Bachelor degree.


The requested course must be related to the professional activity of the applicant and he/she must have at least two years of relevant working experience.

The requested course must be in line with the priority sectors (Basic Health Care,
Education, HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention, Agriculture and Food Security, Public
Administration, Justice, Environment and Water Management) which foster the
realisation of the Tanzania Vision and MKUKUTA.

All applicants must be in the possession of an official admission letter prior to
submission of the scholarship request.

Both applications are open to people from public and private sector as well as civil
society. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants need to
have the written approval of their employer.

5th Annual International Leadership Training Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum

Open to: Young people between the ages of 18-30
The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the fifth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum, to be held August 1 - 9, 2009 in Storrs, Connecticut.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights. To this end, the Forum will:

· Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

· Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders

· Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice

· Provide tools and a platform for open debates

· Provide programmes, activities and processes necessary for human rights leadership

· Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding

· Showcase speakers on such topics as: health and human rights, education, the environment, the plight of child soldiers, the use of media, fundraising, conflict resolution and transformation; litigation and advocacy

The UNESCO Chair will provide all conference participants with dormitory housing, meals, ground transportation in Connecticut, resource materials and a certificate of participation.

Young people between the ages of 18-30, with community service experience, and with demonstrated ability to work on solutions to human rights problems, should apply. Relevant issues include, but are not limited to, human trafficking, the plight of children, refugees, hunger, HIV/AIDs, gender discrimination, racism, classism, the environment and peace education.

Conference will be held in English only. Fluency in English is required. Applicants will be selected based on the strength of their application essay, demonstrated commitment to human rights (practical/hands-on experience), potential impact on the individual and their potential contribution to the Forum, regional and gender representation.
